Indonesia earthquake: 15 dead as thousands evacuate Java

A powerful earthquake rattled Indonesia's main island of Java on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and forcing thousands to evacuate, the country's disaster management agency said. 

"Many houses are flattened to the ground," said Edi Sapuan in Margamukti village, not far from Tasikmalaya. "Only the wooden houses remain standing. Many villagers are injured, covered in blood."
The quake was felt as far away as Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, about 300 miles northeast of Tasikmalaya, and on the resort island of Bali, about 435 miles to the east.
At least 27 people were injured in Jakarta, a health ministry official said.
Hundreds of people sheltered in a military base in Tasikmalaya, fearing that the initial powerful quake would be followed by aftershocks, an official at the disaster management agency said.
Indonesia's main power, oil and gas, steel, and mining companies with operations in West and Central Java island closest to the quake's epicentre said they had not been affected and suffered no damage.
Local tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas within several hundred miles of the epicentre soon after it struck, but were withdrawn about half an hour later.

The Setting for the Miracle
(5:1-3)

Jesus was standing by the Sea of Galilee, which Luke calls the “lake of Gennesaret” (v. 1).⁹² Around Him a crowd had gathered, listening to Him proclaim the word of God. Beyond the crowd of those who were pressing in on the Lord Jesus, there was the sea of Galilee, and two ships were pulled up on the shore. One ship belonged to Peter (v. 3), and the other belonged to James and John (vv. 7, 10). These four fishermen were not among the crowd. Instead, they were off washing their nets (v. 2). They had spent a long and fruitless night fishing (5).

The amazing thing about this scene is that the wrong people seem to be close to our Lord, and likewise the wrong people seem to be at a distance. You would think that the disciples, Peter and Andrew, James and John, who had spent much time with Jesus, would be those in the inner circle, closest to the Master. Instead, the crowds pressed upon Jesus, and the disciples were at a distance, tending to business, washing their nets. They no doubt looked on with some interest as they worked, but they were surprisingly detached from the Master and from the crowd.

Jesus’ appearance at the lake is, in my opinion, not coincidental. I believe that He purposed to be there, knowing that this is where the disciples would be. It is no accident that the boat into which our Lord stepped, and from which He taught, was Peter’s (v. 3). Jesus seems to merely be doing that which would make His speaking more effective and efficient, as well as providing a way of escape from the crowds when He was finished. I believe, however, that Jesus was seeking the disciples. It was time for them to become permanently attached to Him, accompanying Him wherever He went. The time for a deeper level of commitment and involvement had come. The appearance at the lake that day was for the purpose of bringing about a life-changing decision on the part of Peter and his companions. Jesus would momentarily use the boat as His pulpit, but He was intent on making fishermen fishers of men.

Sai Baba himself engages in distribution of food to the poor, distribution of clothing, and has always conducted this service since the announcement of his divinity. In days past, "narayana seva" used to take place on the sands of the Chitravathri River. Now, as ever, this is done annually as part of the Easwaramma Day Festival, and the celebration of His Birthday. Sathya Sai Baba has always set the example for his devotees.

In Puttaparthi, health, water and education to the highest level are free. In the surrounding environs, called the Sri Sathya Sai Taluk, consisting of 100 local villages, Sai Baba has the full responsibility for the health, education and welfare of all those villages and their amenities. This is done free of charge.

Throughout India, The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation is organised into service units. These service units voluntarily provide free medical camps, village cleaning, spiritual education for children, and education for villagers in public health and welfare. No donations or charges for such activities are taken up.

Throughout India, over 1000 primary and secondary schools have been funded by the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust.

The graduating students are encouraged by Sai Baba to dismiss pressure of parents and the calls of fabulous overseas working environment and salary and return to the village, sharing their wealth with local villagers in order to improve local conditions from within and not without.

Sathya Sai Baba, born Sathyanarayana Raju on 23 November 1926, is a popular South Indian guru, religious figure and educator. He is described by his devotees as an avatar, godman, spiritual teacher and miracle worker.
